Hardworking Yet Overlooked
Why I Built Skill Spiral
You've done a lot already – from advanced degrees to major projects.
But why does job search seem harder?
The problem is not your skills – it's how they are seen, especially if you don't fit the mold.
Unfortunately, most career advice gives generic, superficial fixes that cater to recruiters. But the real decision-makers – hiring managers and executives – look for substantive proof. When they can't see it, they fall back on familiar signals like big names and conventional titles.
To tackle this gap, I founded Skill Spiral in 2023. It is the first career services firm to apply analytical, skill-based approaches to job search and leadership development.
Skill Spiral draws on my combined experience of over 7 years as an executive and 15 years hiring 200 professionals across Finance, Tech, Telecom, and Manufacturing. In its first two years, we have supported more than 150 executives and senior managers from nearly 50 countries transition into leadership roles at organizations such as Amazon, Procter & Gamble, Deloitte, and Google.

Our Approach
Every detail of our systems and services are designed to exceed the
sophisticated standards of high-caliber professionals and the modern job market.
At their core is one integral concept: Skills.
This is personal to me.
My life is a case study in what happens when one has the skills, but the system is not built to see them. Growing up in rural Philippines, I faced poverty and LGBTQ+ discrimination, and learned early that merit alone was not enough. Later, as an immigrant to Canada, I encountered systemic racism in the job market. Even as a startup founder at the edge of my field, I saw how privilege often swayed investors' decisions.
What carried me forward was harnessing three forces:

Strategy
Designing paths tailored to my unique identity and situation.
This took me from being the first college graduate in my family to founding a student loan startup – backed by Johnson & Johnson, UNICEF, and Credit Suisse—that helped thousands of under-resourced youth.

Statistics
Deciding with data because not everyone could afford to 'fail forward.'
This mindset drove my career milestones, from advising Coca-Cola executives on billion-dollar investments, to inventing a world-first algorithm significantly more accurate than sophisticated models.

Skills
Focusing on proven capabilities instead of pedigree or titles.
Understanding this currency let me spot and stretch specific strengths in myself and others – from teaching children how to read to guiding executives how to lead.
Later, in my first executive role, those same forces shaped how I led. I used them to develop 50 quiet high performers into a team that delivered double-digit growth across all metrics, four-fold customer acquisition, and the most profitable year on record.
Today, Skill Spiral exists so that those people – the ones doing the real work – are the ones trusted to lead.

In my first executive role, my deep understanding of skills (individual and collective) allowed me to lead a mid-sized team of 50 to deliver:
-
Double-digit growth across key metrics
-
Four-fold customer acquisition
-
The most profitable year in the company’s history
These three forces shaped my life – and they can shape yours, too.
